Viaticals fill a need, often, an important and critical need. Some folks find them distasteful, and liken the companies that offer viaticals to vultures. That I think is unfair. Yes, we are dealing in an area most people don’t like to discuss and are uncomfortable with. That is the human suffering that is experienced with the terminally ill, chronically ill and mental/neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. To this I answer with the age-old admonition, “don’t judge a man until you have walked in their shoes”. Viaticals, or life settlements on the sick and ill, have a place in financial and medical planning of the terminally ill. A viatical can be used to fund hospice or home care, pay for medical treatment not covered by health plans such as experimental or non-traditional treatments. The funds obtained from a viatical can also be used to prepare the home in order that the loved one can be cared for in the home environment. Home care is expensive, so is good assisted living and hospice care. To often we find clients have exhausted their ready cash and assets long before they investigated a viatical settlement as a source of funds. If you are the spouse or family member responsible for the financial aspects of an ill loved one, do yourself a favor, call me. I may be able to relief a great deal of stress through the use of a viatical transaction.
