Viatical is a weird/odd word. Every time I spell it my computer says its a spelling error. I looked it up and it seems to mean traveling, a road or way. So I guess it could refer to options. You could take this road or that road depending on if you are traveling. Misspelled it right again! A viatical now refers to a life settlement transaction concerning the insured having a terminal illness. It is an option for a terminally ill insured in that he or she now has a way to obtain perhaps critically needed funds verses waiting until death for his or her death benefit to mature. Settlements such as this are wonderful in that they exist. This type of life settlement in many states is treated differently as there are regulations in place to protect the consumer- in this case the seller, from fraudulent or abusive practices. A viatical settlement does involve the release of all medical information regarding the inured to not only justify the type of settlement but also to approximate the duration of life as per a life expectancy report. Terminal illness is defined as and untreatable illness or one that can not be cured so the knowledge of the illness and the status of the illness will have expectancy report results to help further clarify the value to be offered from a settlement perspective.
